Why is the message of the cross foolishness to those who are perishing, but the power of God to the elect?

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”- 1 Corinthians 1:18.

Hi Lily.

1 Corinthians 2:14
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Because they did not receive the love of the truth. 2 Thess. 2:10

those who are perishing are on their life’s mission which is to live their lives the way they see fit, kind of blindly running off the cliff and glad of it. any word of redirection or being lead is a complete turn off to them and they call if rubbish

"For the speech about the torture stake is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is God’s power" (1 Corinthians 1:18. Bible).

“Torture stake” sometimes stands for the sufferings, shame, or torture experienced because of being a follower of Jesus Christ. As Jesus said: “Whoever does not accept his torture stake and follow after me is not worthy of me.” (Mt 10:38; 16:24; Mr 8:34; Lu 9:23; 14:27) The expression “torture stake” is also used in such a way as to represent Jesus’ death upon the stake, which made possible redemption from sin and reconciliation with God.

To the so-called wise and intellectual ones of the world the speech about Christ pouring out his lifeblood on a torture stake is foolishness. They scoff at the idea that by exercising faith in Christ’s sacrifice everlasting life in a righteous new system can be enjoyed. That Christ rose from the dead and is now the powerful King of God’s heavenly Kingdom is pure fantasy as far as they are concerned. Yet Almighty God purposes to have this heartwarming message made known worldwide. So to anyone who would become his servant he gives the assignment to preach this good news of his Kingdom. Since this message amounts to foolishness to the wise and intellectual ones of the world, whom does God use to preach it? Listen to the inspired answer from God’s own Word:
4“For you behold his calling of you, brothers, that not many wise in a fleshly way were called, not many powerful, not many of noble birth; but God chose the foolish things of the world, that he might put the wise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put the strong things to shame; and God chose the ignoble things of the world and the things looked down upon, the things that are not, that he might bring to nothing the things that are, in order that no flesh might boast in the sight of God.”—1 Corinthians 1:26-29.

Every cult likes to believe that it’s special and they know the cool secret inside information and that everyone else is dumb and can be looked down on. It’s just human nature, although some of us are intelligent enough to understand this and overcome it.

Is it? It’s a definite assertion, but assertions are easy to make.

It’s also self-selecting: those that are on the inside agree with it, letting them see those who don’t agree as blind, evil, lost etc.
(witness a couple of responses here, so far.)

Now, what’s the actual case that Paul was right?
I looked for it, and wasn’t convinced.

Because we live in a society that is worldy in outlook and if you do not know the Saviour, in spirit and in truth, you are likely to not want to know Him…people have perceptions of what Christians are, and what they believe, and what they might have to give up in order to accept the free gift of life…Jesus Christ, went to the Cross to take all of our sins and by Him resurrecting, He became the first to do so..we will follow Him into eternity, when we too die, or when He returns soon, for His people, and we will have resurrected bodies like our Saviour…God tells us..
For those who rebel against God,the message of the Cross, is foolishness therefore, because it is often seen as being incompatable with their lifestyle etc etc…….mere excuses to avoid knowing Him, personally…
After all, He knows them very well..He sees all they do, say and think…for those who accept Him, their sins are forgiven and remembered no more, but for those who never take the time to know Him, they will face Judgment Day and as the books are opened that tell of everything they have ever done, those who are perishing will be sent to where they will go, for eternity..
This is the literal meaning of this passage…

  9. Cindy says:

It’s foolish to unbelievers because it’s such a simple message. Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. We can’t save ourselves and only Christ can do that. The world is always looking for something complicated. There are tons of books out there about secret messages and codes in the Bible that only a few select people can comprehend. The message is so simple but they can’t see the forest for the trees. It’s too good to be true. They always think that there must be another way to salvation. Natural man is always seeking to save themselves by their good works. They run after the latest religion or belief, hop from church to church, and never have any peace in their lives. 2 Cor 4:3-4. There are some people that aren’t meant to be saved. The Bible is a simple book for believers who see it with spiritual eyes (look at the other poster’s natural man Scripture) but a complicated mystery to those who don’t.
